How to Install

• Download and install the BetterTouchTool App (free 30 day trial) if you haven't already and make sure you have the latest stable BTT version.
  (psst click this commission link if you want to get a license and support me at the same time!)

• Download a version of AquaTouch below and import it

• Open up the BetterTouchTool window, you should see "Welcome to AquaTouch" in the Touch Bar. AquaTouch may automatically start initialising itself.

• Once complete, Slide to the left and tap "Setup Instructions". Follow the on-screen setup instructions for the best experience.

• It'll be good if you gave the "Usage Manual" a read. It's pretty much a FAQ and will get your 'Huh, That's weird' moments to 'Nice, I see what you did there' moments. (well, I hope so )

AquaTouch v3 Betas:

AQT b3.3.1 HOTFIX (19 Dec 2018)

This update requires you to update to BTT v2.667 if you haven't already.

Battery drain observed in this version!

Warning: It has been observed from other users that this version has a more significant battery drain than previous versions. This may be because it's using BTT's very new and fresh alpha features which may not be stable yet.

Details and recommendataions

On my side, BTT has been observed to be hovering between 2-6% cpu usage, spiking to 10% when opening a heavy group. It's not a constant high drain, just occasional 3-minute spikes of increased activity, usually only when the AQT control strip is being interacted with actively.

If battery usage is a major concern for you, then I suggest you stay/download b3.0.2 (below) instead. You'll still get most of the features, this latest version (b3.3.x) is mostly a refinement release switching to BTT's alpha builds for it's new features that fix many AQT cosmetic bugs.

INSTALLATION ( important )

• Download and install all assets listed above.

• Open up the BetterTouchTool window, you should see "Welcome to AquaTouch" in the touch bar.

• Slide to the left and tap "Setup Instructions". Follow the on-screen setup instructions.

• IMPORTANT: Head to the AQT settings next to the Setup button (in the TouchBar when the BetterTouchTool is open) and tap every setting on and off.
  You need to do this to set all the variables within AQT to make it work!
  This step will be automatic in the future but it isn't at the moment.

Notes:

• This preset is designed to be used with only two buttons in the control strip, the BTT button, and another button of your choice. For me, this is BTT button and media Play button.
  It's optimal if you remove all but one button from your control strip in the system settings, as volume and brightness can be controlled using gestures.

• Note that a limitation of gestures requires you to open the BTT bar if it is not open before you swipe.
  To change the volume, open the BTT bar, then swipe. On applications that aren't supported by AQT, a gesture bar appears. You can swipe as usual on it but you can also quickly close the AQT bar by tapping it so you can continue to use the native buttons.

Fixed bad schedule widgets.
• You’ve probably completed school and that maths exercise, so they’ve been fixed and you can see your own events again

Fixed ‘Nothing Playing’ message displaying when a Netflix video is running.
• also made it show a loading when it’s loading.

Safari Widgets don’t open the Safari AQT Bar automatically now. It was kind of annoying.
• Instead, the AQT icon changes to the site’s icon. (SoundCloud and Facebook don’t work like this. Still need to figure them out.)

Youtube Safari Widget.
• New PiP button. now you can pop the video out easily and procrastinate while working! (don’t do this) (hopefully it works, it’s kind of hacky)
• Improve the skip ad button. You need to enable youtube ad tracking for this to work for now. Still much room for improvement.

Added Missing Haptics to my secret developer tools in the welcome screen. Can you find them?

Notes:
• @Dom Escape keys in the CS will be fixed soon. I plan to redo how it updates it’s look.
• plan to integrate the skip ad function into youtube’s now playing widget once I get the good version working.

RECENTLY ON AQT b3.3.0 (17 Dec 2018)

Not much new features, but AQT is now MUCH more smoother to operate. I collaborated and discussed various BTT features and refinements with @Andreas_Hegenberg, funnily enough; to get BTT to support AQT. Though there might still be some bugs with the new feature, I can definitley say that AQT is way more fluid and stable due to his new changes. Head to the 'Quality Improvements' to see a list of these improvements.

AQT Version Naming Scheme Changed.

• b0.0.0 - indicates that it is a beta. Betas are stable enough to be used daily but may have some bugs and incomlpete features that might not work. It’s the cutting edge version that is quite experimental.
• v0.0.0 indicates a final stable (afaik) build.
• X.0.0 - indicates a major redesign in the way AQT works.
• 0.X.0 - indicates new app support and new features
• 0.0.X - indicates a bugfix/hotfix release that fixes reported bugs.

Netflix Now Playing widget

YouTube Now Playing Widget

• Now supports returning “Paused/Video Ended” (iAmWaldo again!)
• Tap to play/pause YouTube directly without switching to it’s window. (very useful)

Important Installation Note:
After installing AQT b3.0.2, please:
• tap the setup instructions button, then
• tap EVERY option in the settings on and off.
This will set various variables required to ensure the new scripted triggers work properly with the new settings view.
I'm working on a smoother update experience, so hang on for that.

Important Usage Note:
The implementation of the settings and conversion of many triggers into applescript widgets may increase processor stress / battery drain. This is a beta and i'll need feedback about this to ensure that it's tamed enough for the full release.

This is a work in progress, There are MANY rough edges.

The help window has not been updated to the new control strip, so here's the tips:

Together, the four icons displayed on the right side is called the control strip. It consists of four buttons and can be tapped to open a specific view:

Play - Tap to open Media Control Mode - Now Playing apps will stack and appear here. Control your media playback from here.

Calendar - Tap to open Schedule Mode - see upcoming events and reminders, as well as the date, time and weather.

Switches - Tap to open system controls and toggles. The connectivity palette is also here.

Apps - Tap to reveal currently open apps on the left side, and quickly launch apps on the right side.

Additionally, you can hold most of the control strip icons to do an action.
Play - Play/Pause currently playing media without opening any UI

Calendar - Open Notification Center

Switches - Nothing, at the moment. (any suggestions?)

Apps - Close the BTT / AQT touchbar, reveal system touch bar.

I hope this version is usable and of decent quality. I'm aware of many bugs, but if you encounter any then please mention so!

The features used to make this happen are very experimental and may break, resulting in annoyance at your end if it does. Please report any issues with the control strip as this makes it easier for me and @andreasHegenberg to debug.

Refined Safari Widget indicators (aka back buttons)

• Yes, they were a mess. They are now merged into the CS and I’m not sure about it, so give me some feedback about this! Seems to work well for me as I used it. I can’t think of a better way as of now.

Escape keys should now be fixed

• They should update to your preference properly now.

Control Strip

Play Button Highlighting

• Should now more stably show for global non-iTunes apps. I needed a now playing widget in there for it to work properly, so i added it though it’s invisible.

• There is now an indicator on the control button that tells you if Do not Disturb is turned on.

Schedule Mode Highlighting

• It didn’t follow the ‘on calendar / on reminder’ options before, now it does.

DND, Dark Mode and MicMute Toggles

• Now start with a striped Icon that shows they are loading. (May be slower to indicate their states. Should I revert them?)

Notification Badges

• Are now in a seperate Conditional Activation Group for easier tweaking, and to easily make them show in more places with the introduction of stuff like the ‘mini control strip’ or ‘web widget control strip’ in some places.

Haptics Toggle

• It now completely turns haptics on/off, including BTT’s haptic settings.
• This requires a quick restart so you’ll be notified of this.

Startup Visual Improvements

• Startup has been made less gimmicky, as the notification badges while loading have been refined and neatened up.

New Aquatouch Help Window

• Added information about new features in a new layout.

Safari is now a full set

• Safari is now a full layout. It was such a hassle having it toggle on and off and was super buggy because of this. Safari widgets was also a big mess.

We’ll miss some of the native tools that the safari touch-bar offers such as the nice tab view, media scrubber and bookmarks selector, however I found that I didn’t use those much anyway. Actually, I somewhat managed to keep the bookmarks selector Kinda breaks if you have bookmark folders though.

I hope this simpler, less switchy set based on chrome’s layout is much better to use. (Yes, Chrome web widgets are still coming soon.)

Toggle Arrow Key Media Controls ON/OFF
If you use standard fn-arrow keys, you can now turn the AQT arrow key media controls (fn-arrow keys) off in settings.

Quality Improvements

• Added option to receive a quick notification about new updates when you wake your mac.
• You can turn this on in AQT settings. When it’s off, see update news by opening BTT. It’s displayed in the touch-bar where the welcome message usually is.

Performance Optimisations

AQT is now SIGNIFICANTLY more energy efficient.*

Sorry for draining the batteries of your laptop . I hope those of you in cold weather at least enjoyed the warm lap / hand warmer!

As you can see here, AQT was shockingly behaving very badly. I wasn't aware of this until I installed Intel Power Gadget just recently.

The main culprit was calendar requests, and menubar checks.
By reducing calendar access from every 5 seconds (to update the widget accurately after changing settings and waking from sleep). I managed to be able to seperate the widget update from the calendar requests, so now calendar requests only happen every two minutes with the widgets still updating accurately.

This and various other optimisations result in AQT being almost the same as default macOS, I've noticed no more oddly warm lap heater and perceived increased battery life (though I'm not sure if it's actually longer...)

Unfortunately I haven't found a way to make menubar checking widgets more efficient, but I've adjusted their timings so at least they somewhat run under 2.5GHz clock speed. Preview and Stickies are the two main apps that contain these. I have sent in a feature request for a BTT native widget to be made if possible.

• Optimise the QuickShedules button (in the QuickStrip).
• Calendar icon in the CS is now more efficient when highlighting is turned off.
• Optimise the "No Apps Playing" message with the QuickPlay widgets
• Remove highlighting from "BUISH" buttons in onenote as they caused high CPU temperatures and never worked well anyway.

I combined my own finder native touchbar and AQT's extra tools. I wanted to add tags because I use it often but that doesn't seem feasable yet.

Preview is now a replacement set!

I'm quite proud of this one! Features three tabs, "View", "Edit" and "Markup", enabling you to streamline your editing and scribbling better.

Switches layouts based on the file type that is open; Document-related controls won't show up for an image and vice versa. Switching document types also doesn't switch the tabs! Seems expected but that was interesting to implement.

Brave browser added.
Literal copy-paste from safari. No web widgets yet. If I feel like it then I might add support, Brave seems to support scripting.

You love using the dock in QuickApps? Or maybe you prefer to always see your playing media?

When you open the QuickStrip, it will now stay open. Switch Apps, Watch a movie, slide between desktops, whatever you do, the QuickStrip will now stay put when you open it.

More Stability Improvements

Show

Web Youtube

• YouTube Controls can now handle zeroes, quotes and '&'s more stable
• Picture in Picture now targets the button from the toolbar, which should make it activate more stably.

Startup and Settings

• AquaTouch's initialisation scripts have been optimised and should not grind BTT to a halt anymore. it also sets itself up much, much faster.
• New Settings UI design with categorised settings
• Manuals have been proofread and re-written. They also use images stored within the preset, so if you have no internet they'll still show!

Pinned Widgets

• Pinned Widgets such as 1Keyboard and Discord now run on Conditional Activation Groups, they won't show up or run in the background if the app is not open.

QuickApps, QuickPlay

• QuickApps and QuickPlay now send keyboard shortcuts directly to the app, reducing chances of misfire
• QuickApps - More scrolling space for app shortcuts.

Apple Music

• Add to library button fixed
• Sliders should be more stable
• Current Song display should not flicker when paused anymore

Web Controls

• Web Controls should no longer fall apart when using chrome
• The back buttons shouldn't disappear anymore and cause you to be stuck into using them.

Web Twitch

• Refined icons, added "Make Clip" and PiP button

Netflix

• Netflix QuickMedia Widget now actually works (i finally have access to it).

Greatly Improved Performance

Redoing code with Javascript and BTT APIs

Many of AquaTouch's previously power-hungry Apple Script checks have been converted to now use Javascript and BTT APIs!

AquaTouch now idles at 3% (down from 6% in earlier versions), can run with just two AppleScript runners and continues to remove large CPU usage spikes!

The above was recorded with all notification badges turned on and running! Previously, this would cause the CPU to constantly clock at maximum speed. Here see them all trying to load at once:

Behaviour Changes

Show

As various features have improved and upgraded, some actions have been changed:

• Functionality for Facebook Messenger Clients Caprine, Chatty and Goofy have been removed in favour of the official messenger client for MacOS, which can be found on the App Store.

• With the introduction of the new connectivity view with bluetooth widgets, QuickStrip hold actions have changed:

• Holding QuickControls instantly opens the connectivity widgets.

• Holding calendar now toggles Do not Disturb instead of opening notification centre.
  To access notification centre quickly, see [System Preferences → Trackpad] and use the trackpad gesture. To access Siri quickly, see [System Preferences → Siri] to use one of the keyboard shortcuts such as "hold command-space".

To finish installation properly, please open the BTT configuration window after importing the preset.

AquaTouch is designed for English Systems. It's able to run on non-english systems, but functionality may be limited. To support other languages, AquaTouch's code would need to be translated. Sorry for any inconvenience!
