macOS 16 Tahoe - Compatibility & Discussion Thread

Good news, BTT will work fine on macOS 16 Tahoe and there are some interesting things that BTT could integrate with.

I'll definitely add support for Spotlight App Actions, I had always hoped Apple would implement an extensible Spotlight. I'll need to check how good these App Actions are and what can be done with them.

Also BTT's upcoming AI integration will definitely allow to use Apple's locally running AI models.

I was right about Apple adding a Clipboard Manager, although it is pretty limited right now in what it can do.

Developer Beta 1 is very rough though. Definitely do not install yet. BTT currently works but with various UI issues. BTT's Clipboard Manager currently pretty much freezes (also some UI issue). I'll fix these basic issues next week.

Actually, it's kind of disappointing because the spotlight still seems very basic compared to Alfred. The ChatGPT integration with Spotlight is pretty odd too, and it's very slow. the new app icons are terribly designed. :(((

The only decent feature is the app actions.

Even their clipboard manager can't handle multiple selections or fully support keyboard access... BTT and Alfred's clipboard history are way way better than Apple's.

I think spotlight will get better once apps start supporting the new dynamic app intents (also there are tons of bugs in this beta)

I think I have some good plans on how to make this nice and extensible

Porting BetterTouchTool to Linux :joy: ?

nobody would pay for BTT on linux

but on topic, I am very excited to try out the beta but I am holding myself back because I only have 1x each apple platform. It's awesome to see spotlight get more love, I have been using more of spotlight than raycast anyways recently because it allows me to get to the information i need faster as everything is in the root search.

Offtopic:

BTT offers sooo many (I cannot stress this enough) good stuff, so definitely a lot of users will pay, including me. But BTT for Linux won't happen :\ .
BTT is the only reason I would continue using macOS. Before I discovered BTT, I regretted my choice to use macOS/MacBook for a workstation.

On the topic - I'm relieved that BTT works on macOS 16, hopefully it will stay that way before the final release

yep linux is even more unlikely than Windows

Have you try Keyboard Maestro as well? Using together with BTT, they make Mac the perfect desktop automation beast.
If using Tampermonkey together (yes, Tampermonkey script can call them though URL scheme, or using their built-in local webserver) ), could do even more incredible things.

There's a chat GPT Integration in spotlight? How? Where ?

Open Spotlight, search for "Ask..." Ask ChatGPT will appear in the search, then you can use it. It's okay, not super powerful.

same reason for me

There is huge upsurge in linux in past 2-3 months, especially after DHH released omarchy and omakub. Are you aware of this @Andreas_Hegenberg

Not true anymore, look for omarchy and omakub users.
People are buying brand new $1000 laptops just to use linux.
times are changing for linux world finally...I would also give it try soon.

I’ve got Omarchy on my Dell XPS. Honestly, there’s no magic at all, Zero automation... it just looks clean, but that’s about it. I’ve been a Linux user for a long time and still love it, but Mac OS is my daily driver. Nothing really replaces Alfred, BTT, CleanShotX, Little Snitch, and so many other great apps.

Also, one of the biggest issues with the Linux community is how much pushback you get around paid software. The moment you mention a ‘paid app,’ people start gagging

can you tell a usecase?

Could be true, but I don't think so. Like that is true anymore. People are buying laptops just to install Linux. I don't think they would mind paying $20

I think those will come...

on the automation part, they still want to do... but before that, they are making it stable and easy it install.

Regarding the software, can you name the ones that you use daily on macOS?
Never heard of little snitch before... looks like a good software.
For me, also Better touch, is the main reason of non-shift to any other operating system

also
Has anyone updated its main computer to Tahoe?
You suggest upgrading?
using ipadOS26...so far so good.
Not sure about the macOS one.

On the automation side, I honestly don’t think Linux can match what macOS does. Most of the automation magic on Mac comes from AppleScript and deep system integration. On Linux, there isn’t much that can really speed up or improve the user experience in the same way.

As for apps, there are just so many on macOS that don’t have a real Linux equivalent:

  • BTT: the god of automation and magic
  • Little Snitch: firewall that shows every connection apps make
  • CleanShotX: the best screenshot/annotation tool with one-click cloud hosting

Linux is solid, but the UX gap is huge. The quality and polish of macOS apps and built-in tools like Calendar, Mail, Spotlight, Reminders, Notes… it all works together seamlessly. On Linux you end up with clunky calendars that feel like they’re from the 70s, odd text editors, and half-baked notes apps. Open source is great, but there’s no ‘Andreas-level’ developer there
