BTT and LogiTech MX 4

Now that the MX 4 mouse is available, would anyone advise installing the Logitech Options software (again)?

Or can BTT do everything which their own app can do… remembering that many of us deserted it because it was so bloated?

My MX 4 will arrive today - I can share if an how I got it running.

Based on this thread Re-assurance request, please - #9 by MSealey my tendency would be to use BetterMouse in combination with BTT to get it to work.

I know that Andreas is working on a native logitech protocol implementation - maybe there are updates!?

Nonetheless, since this mouse is brand new - I would expect a challenge to make it run.

Thanks, @Volker!

I have to admit, a little shamefacedly, that I’m so far only really considering the MX 4 because I feel I ought to. The 3S seems the very best mouse for my needs… right-handed non gamer etc.

If I didn’t think that the Options + was such a bloat and that Logitech’s support for it (and everything else for that matter) were good (existent, even!), I would probably never have switched to BTT (and, Yes, BM).

May I ask, @Andreas_Hegenberg, please: any updates, thoughts? TIA!

Below a summary on what I’ve found out so far.

What have I done:

  • Checked which buttons of the MX 4 are recognized by default in Better Touch Tool, Karabiner-Elements and Better-Mouse
  • Played around with Logitech Option+
Mouse Function Better Touch Tool Karabiner-Elements Better-Mouse
Left Mouse Button Leftclick button1 Leftclick
Right Mouse Button Rightclick button2 Rightclick
Middle Mouse Button Middle Mouse Button button3 Button 2
Button behind Middle Mouse N/A N/A N/A
Scroll Up (vert) Scroll Up N/A Scroll Up
Scroll Down (vert) Scroll Down N/A Scroll Down
Scroll Up (hor) Scroll left N/A Wheel tilt left
Scroll Down (hor) Scroll right N/A Wheel tilt right
Back Button 3 button4 Button 3
Forward Button 4 button5 Button 4
Button in front of fwd Button 5 button6 Button 5
Action Ring Button Button 6 button7 Button 6

As you can see, the button behind the Middle Mouse Button is not recognized by any of the tested software. This button changes the behavior of the Mouse Wheel (free flow - haptical steps)

Logitech Option+:

  • You can freely configure every button
  • Even the Button behind the Middle Mouse can be configured
  • You can even set a keyboard shortcut to each button
  • The software is huge and seems to be bloat
  • It's not easy to get completely rid of everything the software installs
  • BTT cannot read this keyboard shortcuts set by Logitech Option+ --> this makes it a no go for me

@Volker - very many thanks for this!

You have no idea how helpful and useful it is (well, perhaps you do): much appreciated

May I ask a couple of questions; not entirely sure, please:

I use this all the time: the difference between ‘regular’ (aka ‘slow’/’ratchet’) scrolling and ‘infinite’ - i.e. to get to the bottom (or top) of a very long page quickly and almost effortlessly.

Wouldn’t want to be without it.

I think you’re saying that that scroll switcher is only not (yet? @Andreas_Hegenberg ?) actually recognized by either BTT or BM.

But that it could be configured.

Yes?

Thanks for your comments on Logitech Options+

That’s my fear. There are lots of reports that it takes up huge CPU power, not to mention memory. Is that still the case?

Even following instructions like these?

You mean you won’t/can’t install their software, don’t you; not that the MX 4 is out of the question altogether for you?

Again, many thanks!

You want a dedicated button to change the mode between "ratchet" and "infinite"? That was working for me - it seems that the button behind the mouse wheel is used for this.

Personally, I dont want to spend a button for this since the wheel automatically switches to "infinite" if you give it enough momentum.

I want to use this button in BTT for triggering custom actions - since this button is currently not recognized by BTT (and also not Better-Mouse - Dev will start working on MX 4 support later this month) this is impossible.

I'll try to realize it with the Generic Device Feature later today.

I haven't done too much testing with it, since I cannot properly use it with BTT - it's not an option for me. The whole software ist around 300 MB big - compared to BTT this is huge.

This helps - make sure to do this if you have uninstalled Logitech Option+ to get rid of background functionality.

Yes, that's what I meant.

Update: With the Generic Devices functionality in BTT I was able to make the missing button work. See screenshot for details.

Many thanks again for the information and directions, @Volker!

If I do decide to get the MX 4, I now know where to come

@Andreas_Hegenberg - do you have plans for any of this, please?

yes, but no ETA
