Could someone advise me the best way to transfer and update BTT from Intel to Apple Silicone without Rosetta? MacBook Pro 16" i7 right now with BTT version 6.640 but getting a MacBook Pro 14" M5 Pro tomorrow. Thank you so much for the advice.
Your license file lives in the following location:
~/Library/Application\ Support/BetterTouchTool/bettertouchtool.bttlicense
Just copy it to your new computer (maybe to Downloads), and install the newest version of BTT there. You will get a dialog box asking for the license file, and you can select the location you copied it to.
Actually copying your settings is a little harder, but I believe that you can just run BTT once, installing the license when prompted. Then quit BTT, and you can copy the entire contents of your old
~/Library/Application\ Support/BetterTouchTool/
directory onto the new computer in the same location and you should be good to go.
Note that there is also one more file which I recommend copying to the new computer as it contains some of the global settings:
~/Library/Preferences/com.hegenberg.BetterTouchTool.plist
Or you can try the new "sync" facility, but someone else will have to give you advice about using it, as I don't have any experience with it.

~/Library/Application\ Support/BetterTouchTool/bettertouchtool.bttlicense anywhere. Something happened a few years ago and my Mac didn't recognize BTT so I had to get the license from Andreas and reinstall BTT. I have an e-mail from 2018 with a download link that takes me to a BTT page with options on the 45 day free trial to "download the latest", "previous versions", or "verify codesignature". I also have the license number and order ID number as well as the receipt of purchase but no folder with the license.
Can I download the latest version from the new Mac and then input the license number there somewhere in that process? It sounds like I might not be able to keep all the settings, though. There also is no file:
~/Library/Preferences/com.hegenberg.BetterTouchTool.plist
What is the new "sync" facility that you mention? Under "About BetterTouchTool" there is an "Export License" tab. Is this what you are talking about? There's also (under the "About BetterTouchTool" in the menu bar) an "Import License" option.
The BTT app will transfer to the new Mac (from a TimeMachine backup) but I would have to use Rosetta in order for that version to work on the Silicone Mac and that won't work for much longer from what I understand.
It looks like the "Export License" option does what you want. I didn't know that existed!
Just export the license and copy it to your new computer.
As far as I understand it, there is no "license number" that you can just type into BTT, you need the license file.
As for the sync feature, look in the BetterTouchTool menu, click on "Settings", then look for "Sync" on the left side.

Thank you for the reply and it was very helpful - feels like I'm making progress. I did look at the other thread you sent and did find that BTT folder (~/Library/Application\ Support/BetterTouchTool/) through the BTT "help" tab. According to that thread it appears that the BTT folder would have everything including the settings, preferences, all the actions and gestures, back up versions, license, etc. Through a mixup on the new Mac I'm getting (I was sold the wrong one and am exchanging it) the only way I could open BTT was to install Rosetta. Perhaps it was only needing to use Rosetta if I wanted to use BTT instead of just opening up the BTT app. Assuming that the BTT file is transferred over to the new Mac through the TimeMachine backup and no reason it shouldn't be (I could always copy that folder onto a flash drive if needed and download it to the new Mac), would it then be a matter of opening BTT somehow and updating to the latest version in order to run it without Rosetta? I think the latest version now separates BTT updates into Intel Macs and Silicon Macs.
Rosetta is irrelevant, all BTT versions since the very first Apple Silicon Chip was released have been natively compiled for Apple Silicon.
You also definitely have a ~/Library/Application Support/BetterTouchTool folder if you have been running BTT, you can go there via FInder => Go => Go to Folder, make sure to include the ~

I did find the folder and I thank you for the assistance. The reason I ask about Rosetta is because, on the 14" M5 MacBook Pro I returned, the only way to run/use BTT (or perhaps the version I'm on now - 6.640) was to install Rosetta. I know Rosetta allows Intel-based apps to run on Silicon Macs and will be discontinued by 2028. Perhaps (or most likely) I'm not understanding so I appreciate your patience and help.
rosetta is definitely not required on a M5 unless you try to run a very (> 5 years) old version of BTT

nothing, only using a very old version could require that
I'll report back once I have the new Mac but the question that remains unanswered is why, when trying to open BTT, does a pop up appear requiring Rosetta to be downloaded in order to run BTT? Maybe there is a way to just ignore this and somehow open and run BTT ragardless. Hopefully, I'll have the machine later today and can provide an update with screenshots if needed.
unless your BTT is loading some external plugin, such a popup can only happen if you use a very old version of BTT.
If you migrated the system, it could be some legacy color picker extensions or similar that get loaded. BTT itself never needs Rosetta

So, in spite of being on version 6.640, this is why I'm prompted to download Rosetta when I try to open BTT. What do I need to do so I can open and use BTT without Rosetta but still have all the settings saved?
