Trackpad Gestures Not Working After Clean Reinstall — All Permissions Granted

Hi Andreas,

I'm having an issue where no trackpad gestures being recognized in BetterTouchTool. I've used ChatGPT to consult and followed all recommended troubleshooting steps, including:

  • Granted full permissions under Accessibility, Input Monitoring, and Automation
  • Deleted both the Application Support and Preferences files
  • Performed a clean reinstall, rebooted the system, and created a new preset
  • Tested basic gestures like 3-finger click, 3-finger swipe, and corner tap - none are triggering
  • Tap-to-click and gestures work perfectly outside of BTT
  • Disabled and disconnected all other input-related software and hardware (e.g. Kensington mouse)

I've attached the diagnostic log exported via Help & Support > Export Diagnostic Debug Information.

BetterTouchToolDebug copy.zip (70.2 KB)

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Only trackpad gestures are not working or any trigger (e.g. keyboard)? You can check the "Live view":

Thanks for the reply!

I'm able to set up keyboard triggers like "option + num pad 2" makes the curser jump two words ahead. But BTT does not recognize any input from the trackpad. The Live View window shows no inputs whatsoever.

To clarify, the trackpad works normally - I can use it a mouse without any set up for all the usual task one would use a trackpad for. But it's the issue of having any BTT commands trigger from the use of it.

I've tried giving it obscure triggers that won't overlap with usual mouse input, like several finger clicks and top left stuff - but with no effect.

Hm, can you check if changing the selection from the dropdown makes any difference and any input is being registered?

if live view doesn’t work, something is usually broken at the system level. I have only had one or two cases of this in many years, but I don’t think there is a way to fix it without reinstalling macOS.

What kind of machine are you using?

Thanks for the response!

I'm using a fairly new and powerful machine in a MacBook Pro 16" M3 Max, 30GPU. 36GB ram, 1TB SSD. I'm still running Sonoma 14.6.1. I've been holding off updating the OS, but do you think that might help?

Can't say that worked either unfortunately.

upgrading might help as it will reset some system level things

Ok, I'll first upgrade it to the latest MacOS and then reset it if it doesn't help. I'll let you know once I've done it.

I've had a strange breakthrough while detaching my MacBook from my desktop clamshell-setup.

I've been using it in clamshell mode while it being hooked up to monitor - meaning I've bought an external magic trackpad from apple to use as the trigger for the BTT commands.

Now while rigging for the MacOS update and possible reinstallation, I opened the MacBook up - and after doing that I touched the integrated laptop trackpad.

As you might have guessed by now; I randomly experienced that the BTT triggers suddenly came online, but only for said integrated laptop trackpad.

My aim is to have the MacBook in clamshell mode while I use the external trackpad - but is this feature perhaps not available?

BTT disables internal trackpads while in clamshell mode, because with the display closed they constantly register phantom touches.

According to your logs there is no Magic Trackpad recognized, only internal trackpad (s). I'd try to update and see whether the issue resolves itself. in general Magic Trackpads are supported while in clamshell mode.
