Note:
Before bug reporting, please make sure you have tried the latest (alpha) version of BetterTouchTool and that you have already tried to restart your system :-). If you encounter a crash, please attach a crash log from the macOS Console.app from the "User Diagnostic Reports" section.
TRIED ALPHA.. still
Describe the bug
When BTT is running on my M5 Macbook Pro, some inputs from the built-in keyboard and mouse are missed. I am NOT referrring to BTT input events, but rather normal interactions with the OS and apps. For example, browing a website, if I click a link, sometimes the “mouse click up” event seems to be missed sometimes causing me to "highlight” everything i scroll over. I have to click several times to fix the issue. Another example, sometimes keystrokes are missed. This issue can take upto 5 seconds to resolve, but usually 1-3
I am using the process utiltiy, but it doesnt seem to help. I have had this Mac w/ BTT for 1-2 weeks and the problems started last week - I believe after Tahoe 26.0.1. I never had these issues w/ my M1. As a reference, I have been using BTT for 10 years.
BetterTouchTool version: (please post the exact version - not just "the latest one") 5.747 ALPHA, but before this I was on the stable release. I dont have that version documented. Sorry
Additional information (e.g. crash logs, related issues, etc.):
This issue makes my Mac unusable when BTT is running
most likely a conflict with some other app, there are in general no such issues with Tahoe.
Try to think about apps you installed when this started to happen and/or look into Activity Monitor whether any app is using a lot of CPU.
ok so the problem has become worse. After updating to 26.1 today, I am starting to notice that keystrokes or mouse movements are being injected into my work. E.g. I am editing the top of a paragraph, all of a sudden my cursor moves to the bottom. ONLY happens when BTT is running. This is my average CPU consumption when this happens. I am going to try and weed through apps to see if there is a conflict somewhere
Did you find a resolution for this (besides disabling BTT)? I’ve been experiencing the exact same keyboard/trackpad input issues you described and didn’t even think it might be BTT before that. I knew it couldn’t be a hardware issue since Karabiner Event Viewer was logging everything, after I saw this post I quit BTT to check for myself and all my inputs started functioning perfectly again.
There’s nothing in my BTT Recently Used list that shouldn’t be there, it’s not an issue of shortcut triggering or repetitive variable polling, I’ve tried both enabling and disabling the Process Utility (no dice), and restarting doesn’t fix anything either
Unfortunately it is almost always some other app that on its own doesn't cause event delay, but leads to BTT not being able to process the events fast enough. Sometimes it's easy to find by looking at high cpu usage in activity monitor, but sometimes only killing apps one by one will help.
In the BTT itself the most common thing that can cause weird issues is the experimental Dropbox/iCloud sync (which is off by default though)
The only unusual CPU performance I’ve noticed throughout this is with Finder, of all things – I don’t even have any automations assigned to Finder via BTT :”)
Would there be any known conflicts with other automation or keyboard input apps/drivers that could cause the input issues? eg. Karabiner, Shortery, Automator, Smooze, LogiOptions, Kensington etc etc
finder at such cpu usage is indeed weird and can definitely point to some issue. My first guess would be some Finder extension. I'd try to check the macOS console app's logs for weirs errors coming from finder and potentially try to disable Finder extensios in System Settings
well I couldn’t figure out what the heck the issue was and I had about given up but then the other day I updated to Sequoia and it’s fine now apparently so who knows
