Toggling Keyboard Backlight in lieu of setting backlight value?

I've found a number of posts in feature requests asking for a way to set the keyboard backlight value, which would be wonderful, but since there isn't a way to do that yet, is there a way to toggle the keyboard backlight on/off as a possible workaround for now?

Ideally I would like to automate the keyboard backlight such that in very low ambient light, the illumination is on but at its lowest setting, and then entirely off otherwise. Currently, I have automations set up to increase/decrease the keyboard illumination accordingly, but since the action can only change the illumination by single degrees and since the automation doesn't always trigger when it should, the illumination can end up being several levels high instead of one, and so when it should turn off, it only decreases and remains on.

I found a very old Applescript that no longer works to toggle the keyboard backlight on and off, but it isn't the best solution anyway since it has to open System Settings and navigate the UI. I'm hoping maybe someone can suggest some other potentially viable solutions. Thanks

good idea, I have just added a "set keyboard brightness" action in 4.889 (uploading now)
