Stream Deck mini suddenly blank

Describe the bug
I have a Stream Deck Mini & a Stream Deck Neo. Both have been working since I configured these in the last few weeks. Since yesterday, the Mini no longer shows any icons. All buttons are blank. However, all buttons are still functional in their actions when they are pushed; they just don't show anything. The Neo still functions just fine.
The Stream Deck Preview detects that the Mini & Neo are connected to the Mac.
I have restarted BTT. I have restarted my Mac. I have updated BTT to the latest 4.889 but no change. I tried the Elgato Stream Deck app to ensure that the device hasn't had a lighting failure, and the official app works just fine.
I don't know where to start to troubleshoot this.

Device information:

  • Type of Mac: MacBook Pro 16" M4 Pro
  • macOS version: 15.1.1
  • BetterTouchTool version: (please post the exact version - not just "the latest one"): 4.889, and whatever it was an hour ago just before this version.

Additional information (e.g. crash logs, related issues, etc.):
No crashes. Just a blank Stream Deck Mini screen.

An update from me while awaiting a response. After several days (maybe 3-5 days?), the Stream Deck mini suddenly started working again. This wasn't after a particular restart or anything like that. Today, it has suddenly stopped again and gone blank.

very strange, I don't really have an idea what could cause this. You are sure it's not maybe an issue with the cable used?

The cable is hard wired into the Stream Deck Mini. I wondered about a hardware issue, but the buttons light up properly & function as they should when using the Stream Deck software.

The SD Mini is plugged into a Thunderbolt monitor as a hub. I've tried plugging it into a USB-C hub and it made no difference. (I can't plug it directly into the Mac because the SD Mini's hard wired cable is USB A.)

Are your stream deck buttons configured "For All Apps" or are they bound to some specific app or condition? (Black screen could also mean BTT doesn't load them)

You could go to help => export diagnostic debug information and send the result to me (andreas@folivora.ai), maybe I can see what's happening

They are bound to apps, except for one blank button “for all apps” as per here (Make Stream Deck to blank when changing apps - #2 by Andreas_Hegenberg).

The weird thing is that this issue only occurs with the BTT software and the SD Mini. All other combinations using the SD software and a SD Neo work fine. Even when I try having the SD Mini plugged in simultaneously with the SD Neo, the Mini doesn’t light up but the Neo works perfectly.

I’ll send the logs later tonight.

A follow-up to this issue.

I've continued to have intermittent issues with the SD Mini going blank for days at a time, then coming back. All this time, the buttons function; they just don't show anything. Meanwhile, the SD Neo works just fine.

However, with the update to the latest BTT 5.294, both SD Mini and SD Neo went blank. I tried the latest alpha update BTT 5.296 but this made no difference.

I rolled back to BTT 5.179 and the SD Neo remained blank for about an hour, then came back to life. I have not tried the SD Mini yet.

I have found that this process above of upgrading, then to alpha, then downgrading, has reverted some of my BTT settings to something from many months ago. I don't know why, but the changes in configurations that I've made from the last month or so seem have been lost.

Perhaps this process above might help you identify what is causing this. In particular, it was interesting that downgrading the BTT back to 5.179 didn't make the SD Neo come back to life immediately, but took about an hour to start showing the buttons.
