Hi Andreas,
I'd love to see a Stream Deck-like companion app for iOS/iPadOS that connects directly to BetterTouchTool running on a Mac.
The idea is to turn an iPhone or iPad into a fully customizable touch-based control panel, using BTT's powerful automation engine.
How it could work
Users could create custom layouts in BetterTouchTool containing:
-
Buttons: Trigger any BTT action, shortcut, macro, script, or Named Trigger.
-
Menus & folders: Organize actions into hierarchical menus with multiple pages.
-
Custom icons & labels: Assign icons, colors, and text to each button.
-
Dynamic content: Display live information such as CPU usage, volume levels, application status, or custom script output.
-
Sliders & controls: Adjust volume, brightness, and other settings.
-
Context-aware layouts: Automatically switch layouts based on the currently active Mac application.
-
Two-way communication: Update button appearance and state based on information received from BTT.
Example use cases
Imagine placing an old iPhone next to a MacBook and using it as a dedicated BTT control surface:
-
Safari: Navigation buttons, tab management, bookmarks.
-
VS Code: Build, debug, Git commands, scripts.
-
macOS: Window management, application launching, audio controls.
-
Home automation: Trigger HTTP requests or custom scripts.
-
Custom workflows: Execute complex BTT automation sequences with a single tap.
Why BetterTouchTool?
BTT already has an incredibly powerful action and automation system. What seems to be missing is a modern, customizable visual interface on external touch devices.
Rather than introducing another automation ecosystem, this would expose the existing BTT functionality through a touch interface.
Ideally, users could configure everything directly inside BetterTouchTool on the Mac, with the iPhone/iPad app simply displaying the configured interface and sending interactions back to BTT over Wi-Fi or USB.
This could essentially turn any spare iPhone or iPad into a powerful Stream Deck without requiring additional hardware or maintaining a separate set of automations.
I would absolutely love to see something like this integrated into BTT!
Would this be technically feasible, and is something similar already being considered?
Thanks for all the amazing work on BetterTouchTool!
