Severe typing lag and dropped keystrokes with BetterTouchTool / macOS text monitoring enabled

Problem description:
For about two weeks now, I’ve been experiencing a major issue with text input on my Mac whenever BetterTouchTool is active or macOS text monitoring is enabled.

The behavior is:

  • Noticeable lag while typing

  • Some keystrokes are not registered (characters get “swallowed”)

  • I have to type very slowly and deliberately for input to be recognized correctly

Key observation:

  • As soon as I quit BetterTouchTool or disable text monitoring in macOS, typing returns to normal with no lag or missed input.

Current assumption:
This seems to be either:

  • a configuration issue I might be missing
    or

  • a bug in BetterTouchTool or its interaction with macOS text monitoring

Questions:

  • Has anyone experienced similar behavior?

  • Are there specific BetterTouchTool settings that could cause this?

  • Is this a known issue/bug?

  • Are there any workarounds that don’t require disabling text monitoring completely?

System info:

  • macOS version: 26.4.1

  • BetterTouchTool version: 6.440

  • Device: MacBook Pro M3 Max

This usually means that some process on your system is using a very high amount of CPU (> 100%). Can you check via Activity Monitor?
