Hi everyone,
I’m using BetterTouchTool (version 4.711 via Setapp) on macOS Sequoia with a Mac Studio (M1), and I’m trying to set up Snap Areas to resize my windows. Here’s the issue I’m running into:
When I try to create a Snap Area for a Finder window or any other application, I move the window to the desired position, then go to the menu bar > BTT > Snap Areas > Create New Snap Area. However, I keep getting this error message:
The only application where this feature works is BetterTouchTool itself, but I can’t resize the BTT window to fit my needs.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Is there a specific setting I need to enable for BetterTouchTool to recognize other apps?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Do you use Bartender or similar apps to manage your menu bar status items? I think another user recently mentions they prevent this from working.
I use Bartender, I left it, but the problem still persists.
When I’m on Safari, for example, and I want to create a Snap Area, I notice the three colored buttons (red, yellow, and green) on the left side of the window are visible. However, as soon as I click in the menu bar to access BetterTouchTool, these buttons turn gray, indicating that the Safari window is no longer active. Yet, the application seems to remain selected, as its name (like “Safari” or “Finder”) still appears next to the Apple logo in the menu bar.
On the other hand, when I do the same thing with the BetterTouchTool window itself, the colored buttons stay visible even after I click in the menu bar to create a Snap Area. With other applications, as soon as I click in the menu bar, the buttons turn gray, and the window is no longer active.
Do you have the BetterTouchTool preferences window open in background? (if so, BTT tries to bring that to front maybe causing the issue)
No, I don’t actually have any BetterTouchTool window open when I do this. BetterTouchTool is only present in the menu bar, without any active window.
I just tried with another menu bar application, and the issue doesn’t occur. For example, if I’m in Finder and I click in the menu bar for a different application, this problem doesn’t happen. It only seems to happen specifically with BetterTouchTool.
Weird! Not yet sure what could cause this. (It sounds a lot like the issue another user experienced using Bartender, but if you quit that it should not be able to conflict anymore)
As a workaround you could assign the predefined action "Create Snap Area Using Focused Window As Template" to a keyboard shortcut:

Yes, actually, I wanted to create a keyboard shortcut for that. I thought I needed to go to System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts, but I couldn’t find the BetterTouchTool menu to create the Snap Area. I didn’t think to do it directly in the app .
Anyway, I just tested with a version of BetterTouchTool downloaded directly from the website, not the Setapp version. Indeed, with this version, the issue doesn’t occur! So, I think the problem is with the Setapp version.
I also tested what you sent me in the screenshot, and it works perfectly, thank you very much!
Ah very strange, the Setapp build should be almost the same but I think the website build is slightly newer - in that case it should be fixed with the next Setapp version.
