My trackpad zoom regularly stops working (as described here). I believe this only happens when BTT is a login item, since the issue doesn’t appear when I use safe mode. I removed BTT as a login item, but as soon as I open BTT, it gets added back again. Is there a way to permanently remove BTT as a login item? I can then just open it manually whenever I log in.
You can just disable "Launch on startup" in the BTT preferences. However it is most likely caused by BTT being a login item.
The issue is a bug in macOS that happens when apps use a specific API, unfortunately BTT can not work without this API. However it doesn't matter whether you start BTT manually or as login item.
