Magic Mouse 3 Finger Click / Floating Menu becomes unreliable

Hi Andreas,

I've been having a floating issue with my Magic Mouse 3 Finger Click setup for some time, and it seems to have become worse after recent BTT updates.

My setup is:

  • quick 3 Finger Click → Middle Click
  • hold 3 Finger Click for ~150 ms → show a Floating Menu
  • release → select/hide the menu

This setup used to work reliably.

Recently, the hold-to-show-menu part has become extremely inconsistent. The 3 Finger Click itself appears to be detected normally, because a quick click still executes the Middle Click action. However, when I hold the click, the Floating Menu very often does not appear at all.

Sometimes everything starts working normally again after restarting BTT, re-importing my preset, or even just opening/changing some BTT settings, and may then continue working for quite a while. I haven't found a reproducible way to restore it.

Previously I also noticed a strange pattern where switching to BTT and then back to another application would make the Floating Menu work once, after which subsequent holds stopped showing it again. With the current version even that no longer seems to help.

There is another possibly related symptom: a quick 3 Finger Click should produce exactly one Middle Click, but in Terminal a single physical click currently pastes the selection twice, as if two Middle Clicks were generated.

I initially suspected my separate 3 Finger Tap trigger, but disabling it did not fix the double Middle Click. I also tried disabling the Touch Release actions of the 3 Finger Click, but that did not fix the Floating Menu issue either.

The main trigger is:

3 Finger Click
UUID: B6EC9C86-9A1A-4FA6-800D-8304BF78E3FE

It uses JavaScript / Named Triggers to distinguish a quick Middle Click from a held click that opens the Floating Menu.

I'm attaching my current full preset, with the issue currently reproducible.

Could you please take a look at the attached preset and check whether anything in the current Magic Mouse / 3 Finger Click handling could explain these two symptoms:

  • the held-click path very often fails to show the Floating Menu;
  • a quick click can result in two Middle Clicks instead of one.

macOS 27, BTT 6.845.

I think I found a concrete bug in BTT while looking into your preset. A legacy middle-click lookup function ignored the disabled state of a trigger - which usually doesn't cause issues, but in your case a few things come together that can lead to weird behavior.

This should be resolved in 6.850 (uploading now). Alternatively you can delete the disabled three finger click trigger you have configured with a middle click assigned.

Deleting the disabled three-finger click trigger did the trick - the menu is triggering reliably again. Thanks!
