looking for a reliable trigger to clear & close search fields

Hello,

Many (most) apps that I use have Find/Search functions. A Keyboard Shortcut is typed and a search field (box or pane) appears and I type in the search terms.

The problem is that I subsequently have to clear/close the search file by clicking on the icon below (all apps use the same type of icon) to continue working and having to click interrupts and slows down my workflow. I would like to create a trackpad gesture to do this quickly. I tried using move mouse to found image →click but it only works part of the time. I am looking for a reliable method to do so.

thank you very much

Sometimes cmd + . works.

Are you finding yourself to do the same action after closing the search - e.g. go back in a browser (previous webpage)? I have similar "issue", but it is mainly (if not only) with MS Edge and I have configured the following actions to the trigger/shortcut which is responsible for "Back":

Esc is used to close the Search (most of the apps I use support this) and the next action is to go "Back".

The "Find/Search Image on Screen & Move Mouse" should work well enough as well, but it requires some trial and error.

Are you talking about a specific app

Unfortunately it does not. Thank you

Apps for example Bear Notes. thank you

Have you tested what I have shown? I've just tried and esc is closing the search. Does this works for you?

by default ESC should work on all standard macOS search fields - do you maybe have overridden ESC in BTT to do something else?

yes. thank you very much

yes, you are right. thank you very much @Andreas_Hegenberg !

After trying the Escape key for a while, I realize that it is not a reliable solution in the 3 apps that I most commonly use, namely Bear App (notes), Apple Note and DevonThink

I tried the trigger below which combines click on found image and escape. It’s better than escape alone, but still not great.

I wonder if you would have a solution to close the search field. A very common problem

thank you very much @Andreas_Hegenberg !

I can say for Devonthink 3 that cmd + . is absolutely reliable. Is that not the case for you?

I tested it and you are right. Thank you very much

I don't use Apple Notes. But after some superficial testing, cmd + . and then esc seems to work.

Edit: Sorry, that's not true.

It works with Find within note, but not Find in Note list, so the information is very useful. thank you very much @Frank1 !!

I find it not reliable. Strange.
