Looking through the pre-configured apps on aqua touch, I saw IINA and got the "modern" VLC.
Conflagration of awesome - touch bar that does backflips, app suggestion, internet radio - now with an equaliser.

While composing this message I was going to comment on the visual representation of the amount of buffering I'd need to do to listen to a section without a break and found to my delight that I could go backwards.
