KeyboardCleanTool 8.3 macOS Golden Gate 27.0 (26A428)

Hi there,

we accidentally upgraded to Golden Gate 27.0 – and while the old KeyboardCleanTool 1.0 still works, we upgraded to KeyboardCleanTool 8.3 due to the Rosetta notification (for macOS 28)

However, we can't get KeyboardCleanTool version 8.3 to work:
Stuck in granting permissions, i.e. they don't seem to stick/be enabled?

Already rebooted, toggled permission on and off again, restarted the app – nothing seems to work so far.

Questions:

  • What are we missing? or: How to get KeyboardCleanTool 8.3 to work on Golden Gate 27.0 (26A428)?
  • Alternatively, it says "BTT has this built in" on the bottom of KeyboardCleanTool; we could not find any related functionality or setting in BTT 6.821 – any hints would be appreciated, how to activate keyboard-lock in BTT for cleaning

try to delete it from the list (toggling on / off doesn't help), then add it again.

For BetterTouchTool: The action is called "Start Keyboard Clean Mode"

Sorry to bother you again, the BTT builtin "Start Keyboard Clean Mode (Lock Keyboard & Trackpad For Cleaning)" works flawlessly! :+1:

But, using KeyboardCleanTool 8.3, while the warning is gone (see screen shot below) – the keyboard is not really locked, e.g. pressing Enter or Space while the Cleaning Mode overlay is shown simply disables it, i.e. toggles the button "Start/Stop Cleaning Mode"

Tried already: reboot, quit BTT, remove permission for BTT

Don't know if the attached video works…

Did you quit & restart keyboard clean tool after the permissions have been re-granted?

Yes, rebooted – restarted KeyboardCleanTool 8.3
Will try again, reboot now-ish

Edit: Back from reboot, still same symptoms.
Removed KeyboardCleanTool 8.3 from permissions in settings, added again, restarted the app – still the same…

Issue still persist, see attached video - after reboot; re-adding permission and re-starting the app does not seem to fix it.
Will try on a different system if we can reproduce it and then report back.

Could you check whether macOS maybe auto-added BTT to "Input Monitoring" in System Settings => Privacy & Security?

If so, delete it from there.

I know that KeyboardCleanTool has already been used by thousands of users on Golden Gate, so I guess it's nothing generic, but maybe some specific setting.

Great hint – we found the culprit.
BTT was not in Input monitoring, but KeyBoardCleanTool.app was (even though it was switched off) - must have added it when trying to figure out how to get it working.

You should be able to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Add KeyBoardCleanTool.app in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Input Monitoring
  2. Switch it off in Input Monitoring
  3. Re-start KeyBoardCleanTool and now it should be possible to bypass the lock with e.g. Enter or Space
