Note:
Before bug reporting, please make sure you have tried the latest (alpha) version of BetterTouchTool and that you have already tried to restart your system :-). If you encounter a crash, please attach a crash log from the macOS Console.app from the "User Diagnostic Reports" section.
Describe the bug
My internet speed slows way down when BBT is running. From 150-200 Mbps to 15-30 Mbps. Does anybody have any idea what could be going on?
Affected input device (e.g. MacBook Trackpad, Magic Mouse/Trackpad, Touch Bar, etc.):
Screenshots
If applicable, add screenshots to help explain your problem. (You can just paste or drag them here)
Device information:
- Type of Mac: Macbook Air M2
- macOS version: Sonoma
- BetterTouchTool version: 4.661
Additional information (e.g. crash logs, related issues, etc.):
BTT really can’t affect your internet speed unless you have configured something that downloads something for some reason
Maybe instead something running from btt causes high cpu load? (check via activity monitor whether the BTT processes use >100% cpu
That could also slow down your internet as a side effect
When I have it running, speed tests show 15-30 Mbps. As soon as I quit BTT, speed tests show 150-200 Mbps.
CPU % 0.5
Could a virus attach to BTT?
Also, when I close the MAC process mDNSResponder the speed returns to normal temporarily. But after a few minutes it slows down again.
what kind of functionality are you using in BTT? maybe some imported preset has some weird scripts running?
I am just using the default functionality. I have BTT Scripting disabled. I have BTT webserver disabled.
I can’t think of any reason, BTT doesn’t hook into the network or anything like this. Have you tried to restart your mac?
My best guess right now is that it’s some coincidence. Do you have a firewall like little snitch that lets you monitor network traffic?
I have restarted the Mac several times. I don't have a firewall or little snitch. I have tested speed before and after quitting BTT about 20 times now and every time it is the same.
I wonder if reinstalling BTT would work?
are you using a specific network speed test app/site? or have you tried different?
As long as you have downloaded your BTT from folivora.ai - Great Tools for your Mac!, reinstalling should not make a difference
I have been using the speedtest.net app and have tried their website many times. I have now tried 4 different websites and the same thing happens.
Could it conflict with another application that uses my network? This issue only started about 1 week ago.
could be, but I can’t really think of a conflict that would cause it. Maybe your BTT is in some sort of bad state in which it tried to re-download the update files indefinitely. In that case completely removing BTT might help.
Maybe it would also be worth a try to install a firewall, little snitch is best in class, but the free lulu app is also great:
I did install Little Snitch just now. It doesn't show any network activity associated with BTT other than a tiny bit when it first opens.
I will try removing BTT completely and reinstalling it. How can I retrieve my license?
How do I fully remove BTT. I removed it from the application folder. Then downloaded it from the website. When I clicked on it it had the same issue. It came up with my presets and license already in it. So I don't think is totally removed it when I removed it from the application folder.
to totally remove it you would also need to delete this folder:
~/Library/Application Support/BetterTouchTool
and this file:
~/Library/Preferences/com.hegenberg.BetterTouchTool.plist
( open the ~/Library folder via Finder -> go -> go to folder make sure to include the ~)
Well, I fully removed it and downloaded it again, but the same problem exists. I don't know what is going on.
so strange!
I don’t have any clue where to start looking into this, but I’ll think about it.
Thank you so much. I am very impressed and happy with your support service. Very quick. Hopefully we can figure this out. I love BTT.
Finally someone else is dealing with this too. I began to doubt everything installed on my computer over the past three days.
Description:
Starting from 8/14 I noticed an unstable ping while playing LoL, with fluctuations between 50~100ms jitter (normally 1~2ms). Testing with iperf3, I observed that the WiFi speed dropped from 650 Mbps to an unstable range of 150~200 Mbps.
I attampted to close every background program as possible, disabled Bluetooth and turn off all nearby wireless device to prevent any potential interference.
Finally, I discovered that the issue was related to BTT. Disabling or pausing it didn't resolve the problem; it had to be completely quit. The Activity Monitor showed no high CPU or network usage from the BTT processes, not event a single packet.
Edited: I also tested by reinstalling with a clean profile, but the issue persisted.
Device information:
Type of Mac: MacBook Pro M2 Max & MacBook Pro 2014 mid
macOS version: Both running Sonoma 14.6.1
BetterTouchTool version: Both 4.661 (46610)
Additional information
The network has been confirmed to have no issues. The WiFi AP can stably run at 650 Mbps, tested by iperf3, and the 500/500 Mbps fiber outbound connection is also performing smoothly as expected.
I only have two MacBook laptops, so I can only test using WiFi, I'm not sure if this issue is exclusive to wireless network interfaces.

maybe you can try downgrading to a previous btt version (Index of /releases ). 4.660 & 4.661 only include minimal changes, but maybe something is somehow interfering with something else
if possible please try v4.663 alpha. I disabled one thing that is at least using some functions of one of the macOS networking APIs and was added recently. I could imagine there is a macOS bug related to this, but it would still be quite weird.
after installing the alpha 4.664 (46640), everything is working normally now.
