I am using an NFC/RFID reader connected to my Mac. I think a great option would be the ability to integrate such readers with BetterTouchTool. It could work as a trigger that activates specific actions, such as typing the content of an NFC tag as a keyboard emulation or just running any other automation.
Edit: I tested it, but the Generic Device function does not support this.
