Hi. I cannot get preset-based iCloud sync working. Part of this might be down to the setup being experimental and it not being a priority for Andreas, which is understandable I guess - though I think there are probably quite a few users using BTT across more than one Mac who would benefit from it working reliably. I note there are several threads from users with issues with no answers. I will submit a bug report but here I want to make some suggestions:

  • Could there be a page of documentation with best practice for setting up the preset-based iCloud sync and clarifying how it works? Even with a disclaimer that the sync is experimental. Because the text in the app is not entirely clear and cannot anyway be comprehensive. For example the configuration wizard in BTT has an 'about iCloud sync' section stating that presets 'sync via Cloudkit assets'. That might not mean much to some users (such as myself); for example I thought once iCloud sync was enabled BTT would create a visible folder in iCloud Drive, and that would indicate it was working. But that isn't the case.

  • The 'experimental sync remains enabled' warning in the configuration wizard is confusing. It is visible regardless of whether sync of either kind is enabled or not. So maybe it should be changed to a warning to make and keep backups when using sync. Or it should reflect sync status (enabled or disabled).

  • Would it make sense to remove the old sync method if it is risky and not going to be updated going forward? It would simplify the settings window Or would that disadvantage too many users?

  • For the old sync setup, the 'delete Cloud Data' function is also confusing, as it seems only to apply to Dropbox. What if the user only connected with iCloud Drive - does it delete that Cloud Data as well? Not clear. It's also not clear what 'reset sync status' does.

  • Text at the bottom of the sync settings page: not clear whether this applies to both sync methods or just one. I think it must only apply to the old sync but that's not clear from the page layout, because the text doesn’t sit inside the grey box with the old sync method settings.

    Hopefully some of this is easy to implement...

There is not much to set up apart from enabling it (as long as you have an apple account configured in system settings), thus documentation probably won't make it much clearer.

In general I would recommend to start with new presets and not try with large existing presets (while that should also work, given the experimental state the larger the preset the more failure points)

For the new sync only the wizard is relevant, I'll make that more clear and maybe collapse the legacy sync settings for now.
