Hi. I cannot get preset-based iCloud sync working. Part of this might be down to the setup being experimental and it not being a priority for Andreas, which is understandable I guess - though I think there are probably quite a few users using BTT across more than one Mac who would benefit from it working reliably. I note there are several threads from users with issues with no answers. I will submit a bug report but here I want to make some suggestions:
-
Could there be a page of official documentation outlining best practice for setting up the preset-based iCloud sync and clarifying how it works. Even if with a disclaimer that it is experimental, I think that would help users, as the settings page is not that clear. T he configuration wizard has an 'about iCloud sync' section, stating that presets 'sync via Cloudkit assets'. But that might not mean much to some users (such as myself); for example I once icloud sync was enabled BTT would create a visible folder in iCloud Drive, and that would be a sign that it was working, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The 'experimental sync remains enabled' warning in the configuration wizard is confusing. It stays regardless of whether sync of either kind is enabled or not. So maybe should just be changed to a warning to make and keep backups when using sync, or should reflect sync status (enabled or disabled). Also confusing because both

Would it make sense to remove the old synchronisation method if its risky and not going to be updated going forward? It would make the settings window simpler. Or would that disadvantage too many users? I suppose Andreas has no way of knowing, and I know BTT keeping legacy options around has many benefits.

For the old synchronisation setup, the 'delete Cloud Data' function is also a bit confusing, as it seems to rely on connecting to Dropbox. What if the user only connected with iCloud Drive - does it delete that Cloud Data as well? Not clear. It's also not clear what 'reset sync status' does.

It's not clear whether the text at the bottom of the sync settings page applies to both sync methods or just one. Reading it again I think it can only apply to the old sync method, but that's not clear from the layout of the page, because it doesn’t sit inside the grey box with the old sync method settings. It would be especially good to know as one of the advice is click manage presets and re-select the master preset - that doesn’t work if one only has one preset.
Hopefully some of this is easy to implement...
