Hitting red X button on corner of window shutting down app

I just installed the trial on my 2019 MBP on mojave. I noticed that when I hit the X in the application, that it shuts it down and the features stop working. This doesn't seem normal practice for an osx app. Is there a setting that I'm missing?

X just closes the preferences window, the BTT process will still be active (and the menubar icon should still be shown)

i think I see the problem. I had "Show macOS Control Strip" active - allowing that to take precedence whenever

Ahh you mean the X on the Touch Bar?

Unfortunately BTT can not know when that is pressed as it is handled by the system. But as you already figured out, you can hide the Control Strip to make BTT take over completely

If you have the Control Strip active you can always press the BTT icon in the control strip or use the predefined action "Toggle BetterTouchTool Touch Bar" to show / hide it.
