I followed the official guide to set up the Hyper key, and I also configured it to act as the Caps Lock key when idle. However, it doesn't seem to be working at all. I’ve tried both long-press and short-press actions, but neither produces any response.
Additionally, I can no longer toggle my Caps Lock normally. Even after removing the shortcut, the Caps Lock key still doesn’t work — it only functions again after I restart the software.
I assumed this setup would work similarly to Karabiner — that is, when pressing Caps Lock (configured as the Hyper key) + A, it would trigger the Shift+Ctrl+Option+Command modifier combination. I’ve mapped that modifier combination + A to a specific action, as shown in the screenshot, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work as expected.
I’ve already uninstalled Karabiner, and Caps Lock is now set to its default behavior (it is not remapped in the macOS keyboard settings).
Could you please clarify how the Hyper key is supposed to function in this context, and whether there are any known limitations or setup requirements for using it in combination with other keys?
Thank you in advance for your help!
P.S. The Shift+Ctrl+Option+Command combination in the second shortcut was entered manually — it does not originate from the Hyper key (Caps Lock).
One thing to note is that BTT’s hyper key will not work while karabiner is still active - if you hust uninstalled it possibly try to restart your machine once.
are you sure it is fully uninstalled? There have been some users with a similar issue where a karabiner kernel extension was still active for some reason. However I don’t know much about karabiner elements.
I uninstalled Karabiner through the application itself. And I noticed that my Hyper key is working — but only sometimes. When I press Caps Lock multiple times, it occasionally functions as the Hyper key, and at other times, it works as Caps Lock.
PS: You can see the Hyper + Caps Lock from the second shortcut and it was from the multiple clicking of Caps Lock.
When I double press the Caps Lock, it will activate hyper+caps lock key at the same time. And if I only press 1 time, it will do nothing. Above 2 phenomenons were observed from the shortcut setting "Click here to record a shortcut".
Unfortunately I have no idea what could cause this. Which macOS & BTT version are you using? I think that maybe the system API's BTT requires were broken on older macOS but fixed again with macOS 15
That should all be fine - but then I'm pretty much out of ideas. I can only imagine some conflict with some other app, but I wouldn't know which ;-(
Maybe check what is shown in the key sequences section in BTT when you try to record a new key sequence by pressing caps lock, it should look like this:
one possible workaround would be to remap capslock to e.g. right-cmd and use that in keyboard shortcuts via BTT's "differentiate left / right modifier keys" option in keyboard shortcuts.
(It probably would be better to figure out why it doesn't work, but currently I can't think of anything. I have been using it for a long time and know that many users do as well - but it is very possible that there are conflicts with some specific app maybe)
I would use the right control. Right cmd already exists as a key. Then you don't need to remap anything But if you want to use Caps Lock, I would try this.
Hi, I would like to know how to set modifier key to hyper type (eg. right cmd). Because when I press the remapped Caps Lock (right cmd) in "Click here to record a shortcut", it would require a normal key.
