Ah-ha. Mea culpa. String concatenation is "&", not "+". I had assumed that either would work since the compiler/checker didn't give an error when I used "+". Silly me. Well, that make life easier, then.
The music controller button still appears after rebooting. However, once I play iTunes or Safari (YouTube) and other players and quit, the music controller will work normally.
A clue! I might have an idea why this is happening now. I wonder if the BTT variables aren't initializing properly? @Andreas_Hegenberg
@myhouseblewup I believe those are events that Siri automatically added to your calendar 
that's probably it, currently the variables are only available after the now playing widget received it's first event. I'll fix that.

Go to the "Keyboard" section of the BetterTouchTool window. The keyboard shortcut's configuration should be visible there. Do you see it?

I'm thinking of changing the shortcut for this reason, haha, you are not the first person to not get what the shortcut is.
I'd love it if people suggested some possible shortcuts that would be easy to remember but difficult to accidentally trigger. Thoughts?
As keyboard shortcuts change based on the keyboard layout, it will be hard to have one shortcut that works for everybody. Maybe one that includes a number instead of a letter - these are the same on most layouts.
(Keyboard shortcuts always save the physical location of the key, not the actual character)
Good to know! I've chosen cmd-shift-P for settings and command-shift-0 for toggling the stock Touch Bar UI 
I've got preliminary settings for date format/siri/spotlight/Notification Center/weather visibility! Check out the Siri button totally not showing up on this large-sized menu bar 
I should have a new version ready tonight or tomorrow with these settings!
EDIT: And here's a menu bar that's set to always use the small time and never show the Siri button:
still some padding kinks to work out but it's almost ready!
How do I view and edit the Apple Scripts in the preset? BTT only says that they are a script, but doesn't actually show where they are stored or how to edit them.

Just open the BTT preferences window, go to the "Touch Bar" section, and double click whatever you want to edit

A couple of issues (BTT 2.634-943):
When trying to set the escape key as normal through the settings via the shortcut key I'm unable to set it to normal (nothing happens after tapping "normal"). However, it does set to combo functionality.
When manually enabling the esc key though the BTT preferences, the key is there but no text appears on the button. This was happening before updating to the new GoldenChaos build.
Trying to change the date / time format in size makes no change.
These have occurred through re-import and restarts.
This is an import issue - make sure you've removed all GC-BTT versions before importing, as all of these features depend on the UUIDs of the widgets.
@Andreas_Hegenberg it would be a useful feature if BTT could update UUIDs used in scripts across the preset on import, because people are perceiving the current behavior as a bug. The sequence of deleting and reimporting presets is not intuitive. It would also be nice if BTT gave the user an alert when it does this ("You had widgets with matching UUIDs so we made new UUIDs for you, please keep this in mind when sharing scripts that rely on UUIDs as they will differ from the original preset").
Ah, ha! Thanks! Removing got those going. I also had to unselect "Icon only, no text" from the esc keys to display the "esc" text on the softkey.

I've noticed you've changed the Play/Pause button code. Whats the status of this new code?
I'm using these quite a lot throughout my preset so i'd like to know the state of it's stability.
It's using new built-in string variables from the native now playing widget. I'm not sure if these are in the stable version of BTT yet. If they are, it's a much more stable and performant solution than the previous play/pause buttons.
EDIT: I just checked and they are definitely in the stable version already
