Can't send keyboard shortcuts with modifier keys in Mathematica

Describe the bug
In Mathematica:
If I send regular key(s), like " = " or {left arrow}, everything works fine.
However, if I send key(s) that include a modifier, like CMD+{left arrow}, Mathematica seems to ignore the modifier, and so just moves left 1 character

In other programs everything works fine

Affected input device (e.g. MacBook Trackpad, Magic Mouse/Trackpad, Touch Bar, etc.):
Keyboard

Upvoting since this seems related to the bug "VirtualBox shortcut in Mac"

I am new to BTT, so my question may be naive.

If I add a keyboard short cut Shift-Return and Mathematica is open, Better Touch Tool crashes. I am wondering if this is related.

Has anyone been able to get Mathematica to work with BTT?
