BTT Hang on Launch on Multiple Macs

  • BetterTouchTool version: 6.378 (and earlier)

NB: iCloud Drive sync is enabled, and has been for years.

Hi Andreas – I’m experiencing a hang on launch for BTT that is pegging the CPU at 100% & makes BTT’s menu bar menu unresponsive. The entire system is unusably slow while BTT is running. BTT’s memory usage does NOT appear abnormal.

I have been experiencing this on an iMac Pro for about ~1 month, but did not post about it because I’m having iCloud sync issues on this machine that I have yet to resolve.

Today, I am unfortunately experiencing the same hang/pegged CPU/system slowdown on my 27” 2019 iMac. I have had to kill BTT & prevent relaunches, or the machine is not usable. BTT’s logs show many of the following lines over & over again in quick succession:

only solution is to disable the experimental icloud / dropbox sync. It can cause weird issues like this if some of the cloud state is corrupted.

I plan to replace it with something better later this year.

Thank you – that’s unfortunate, since it’s been pretty central to my use of BTT.

What’s the recommended way to do this? Is there a command-line option? As I mentioned, I get a hang before I can even get the BTT window to display.

It's possible that disabling the experimental sync also won't help if the local database is corrupted but you can try this terminal command:

Thank you. That command let me get back into the GUI & stopped BTT from pegging the CPU.

Unfortunately, whatever database corruption was present has now spread to all Macs on my iCloud account; they’re all exhibiting the same behaviour & need iCloud sync disabled.

Hopefully I can track down the issue and/or re-initialize the iCloud database so that I can once again use the sync feature.

I do have a internal beta of a preset based icloud sync, maybe I can enable that in one of the next versions. It is even more experimental than the previous sync but also less likely to break the whole setup like the old experimental sync could. The new preset based sync allows to sync individual presets or all of them, which can make it safer to use because worst case one of the presets will break.

But it is definitely even more experimental than the previous sync - I have only tested it myself and only on two machines yet. (To reduce load the sync only runs a maximum of once every 20 seconds)

The wizard requires users to create a full BTT backup before enabling this new sync.
