Best way to switch between windows of current app only?

Hi BTT community,

first of all: BTT is one of the most useful macOS tools for me – thank you for building and maintaining it! :rocket:

I use BTT heavily to switch quickly between apps and windows (see screenshot), and I have a question about the window switching part:

  • I use one shortcut to switch between apps with the action “Activate Previous App” – this works great.
  • To switch between windows, I currently use “Activate Previous Window (Exclude Minimized)”.

What I’m looking for is a way to cycle only through the windows of the currently frontmost application.

Example: When Outlook is frontmost, I’d like the shortcut to cycle only through Outlook’s windows (and ignore windows from other apps), ideally excluding minimized windows.

Is there a better action or setup in BTT to achieve this?

Any tips or example configurations would be highly appreciated – thanks in advance! :folded_hands:

I would recommend the predefined action "Show Window Switcher (For Current App)". That is pretty versatile and can be configured in many ways.

Hi @Andreas_Hegenberg ,

Thanks for your quick response – and as your name sounds German, I can tell you: BTT is really popular over here (at least in my “region”) and very much appreciated. :slightly_smiling_face:

Your suggested solution is great, but it’s unfortunately not quite what I’m looking for. To move to the next window, I still need multiple steps, and it doesn’t always focus the next window in a predictable order (even with the available options tweaked).

What I’m really trying to achieve is a very low-effort way (ideally a single key) to switch between windows – and only the windows of the currently active app. The action “Activate Previous Window (Exclude Minimized)” already comes very close to what I want.

Is there any way to combine this with something like BTTWindowSwitcherActive or another internal “switcher state”, so that I can more reliably cycle only through the windows of the frontmost application?

Thanks again for your help and any further hints! :folded_hands:

The window switcher action can definitely be used for that

Here is a simple configuration:
windowswitcher2.bttpreset (3.1 KB)

(in this preset it uses shift+cmd+< but you can change that of course)

Hi @Andreas_Hegenberg,

Thanks again for your effort and for preparing the preset!

I imported it and tested it, and while it definitely works, for my workflow it’s a bit sub-optimal. Roughly every 3–4 key presses, the cycling “runs into nothing” (it seems to restart from the beginning of the list instead of continuing), and the blue border appears every time.

That visual switching effect is unfortunately distracting for me.

No worries though — I can absolutely live with my current solution using Activate Previous Window (Exclude Minimized).

It would be easy to add some option to allow customizing / disabling the border. I'll check if I can reproduce the cycling issue!

have you tried the native system shortcut CMD+` and then goes thru the current app windows. Its a system keyshort you can change in the setting if you dont like it. I set a trackpad gesture for 4 finger tip tap left to trigger CMD+` because i use 4 finger click to open application switcher so its easy to use both

This is what I do too, along with the prev window shortcut Shift+CMD+`

I have these connected to a StreamDeck + dial, works great for quickly changing windows.

i agree. yah i use activate previous app as well as activate prev window….returrn prev app gets pride of place tho hah aka a better trackpad shortcut 3 finger tip tip left finger which is easier for me to do while window is 3 finger tip tap right finger. but yah those 3 shortcut plus cmd+tab and/or hyper+tab which i use to activate AltTab and Cmd+Tab to activate application switcher native own but i use hyperkey app and it gives you app previews when you toggle over app icons in native window switcher with option to activate app after x period or show a full size preview of app window. I also just switched from DockAltTab to DockDoor, had to bc DockAltTab sadly broke in new betas and anyways Dockdoor has same options as hyperkey and a application switcher with previews and other options but the main reason i use it is for the dock app icon window previews when hovered with added actions

Thank you @wynstaxxx & all for your terrific contribution – really appreciate! :right_facing_fist: :left_facing_fist:
