Associate Keyboard Shortcut to TouchBar Action?

I previously used the Shush tool, but for the last few months it seems to randomly freeze, leaving me scrambling for Activity Monitor while people on a conference call say "Are you muted?" Shush had a keyboard shortcut you could assign and it would change an icon in the menu bar so you easily saw if you were muted or not.

I found a nice touchbar action for muting/ unmuting my mic in these forums. This works because the touchbar will then show if I'm muted. It's not perfect because the touchbar goes to sleep, but it'll at least work. Then I was wondering, can I assign a keyboard shortcut to do the same Applescript. I certainly can, but the touchbar action has an alternate icon. So how can I make the icon on my touchbar change when I run a keyboard shortcut?

Thanks!
