Ambient Light Sensor Triggers clarification?

My automations to change the keyboard backlight brightness level based on ambient light are relatively reliable, but sometimes they don't seem to trigger when expected, and I'm wondering if there's something I can adjust for in the settings. I tried adding two 'ambient light changes abruptly by' but that seemed to make things even more erratic (resulting in the keyboard being illuminated regularly when it shouldn't've been).

So I tried lowering the re-trigger to 10 and 0, but saving anything lower than the default 20 (or -20 in the obverse trigger) automatically reverts to 20 (or -20). I've tried selecting and deselecting Trigger On First Ambient Light Reading, but I can't discern what it's actually doing. Is the 1 second polling happening always? Or only if the tick box above is selected? Also, does it trigger when the sensor value is equal to and below or only when it falls below? I tried looking in the docs but didn't find anything specifically about this.
