After activating any Touch Bar group widget like (emoji or clipboard history) the button shows grey background, after deactivating (second press) the widget the button keeps grey background like it's activated.
This bug appeared on version ~3650, and now the versions is 3665 and it's still there.

Is this always reproducible for you, or does it only happen sometimes? What kind of Mac are you using?
Yep, reproducible always. Once emoji or clipboard is activated it becomes grey (as it should), and then when its deactivated - it still stays grey (as it shouldn't).
It becomes normal again when it becomes invisible for example if to click any modifier key which shows any other Touch Bar layout.

Montery 12.1, yesterday was 12 (but works on both versions)
