Play/pause action doesn't work

Note:
Before bug reporting, please make sure you have tried the latest (alpha) version of BetterTouchTool and that you have already tried to restart your system :-). If you encounter a crash, please attach a crash log from the macOS Console.app's "Crash Reports" section.

Describe the bug

Triggering the play/pause action doesn’t actually play/pause audio on the system. I activated the HUD to make sure the trigger was working properly. Pressing Function+F8 does work. I even tried creating an action that sends the keyboard shortcut Function+F8 which also doesn’t work (and it also shows a little ? character in the shortcut recording field (see screenshot)

Affected input device (e.g. MacBook Trackpad, Magic Mouse/Trackpad, Touch Bar, etc.):

All keyboards

Device information:

  • Type of Mac: Intel Macbook Pro
  • macOS version: 26.3.1
  • BetterTouchTool version: 6.325

Additional information (e.g. crash logs, related issues, etc.):

you mean the standard play/pause action? That one definitely works unless something on your system is actively blocking it. It is one of the oldest actions in BTT and just simulates the play/pause key.

With what app have you been trying it?

Yes the first action I tried to make was using that action. Trying to get it to work with Music.app and Firefox (both of which respond to Fn+F8).

Any idea on how I can troubleshoot if something is disabling systemwide play/pause ? The only way I know how to trigger it outside of BTT is Fn+F8

Thanks for the quick reply!

How are you triggering the action from within BTT?

A keyboard shortcut (Hyper+Space). I tried a mouse click too, both seem to successfully trigger (the HUD pops up) but music doesn’t stop playing.

with hyper+space I could imagine some of the hyper modifier keys interfering with the play key, but with a mouse click there is nothing that should be able to interfere ;-(
