Subject: MX Master 4 horizontal thumb wheel stops working in some apps when Smooth Scrolling modifier is enabled
Hi Andreas,
I’m using an MX Master 4 for Mac with BetterTouchTool on macOS 27, without Logi Options+.
I found a reproducible issue with the “Smooth Scrolling (like Trackpad)” scroll modifier.
Setup:
- MX Master 4 for Mac
- macOS 27
- BetterTouchTool only, no Logi Options+
- Thumb wheel used for native horizontal scrolling
Problem:
When “Smooth Scrolling (like Trackpad)” is enabled, the MX Master 4 thumb wheel no longer scrolls horizontally in some applications.
Affected apps I confirmed:
- Finder
- Adobe Photoshop
Apps where horizontal thumb wheel scrolling still works:
- Safari
- Microsoft Excel
Important observations:
- If I disable the “Smooth Scrolling (like Trackpad)” modifier, the thumb wheel immediately starts working normally in Finder.
- If Smooth Scrolling is enabled, the thumb wheel does not work in Finder normally, but it does work while I physically hold the Command key.
- I have a separate Command + Scroll modifier configured for zooming. If I disable that Command-scroll modifier, Command + thumb wheel stops working as well.
- Moving the Smooth Scrolling modifier to the bottom of the scroll-modifier list does not change the behavior.
- “Simulate Trackpad Scrolling” is disabled. I do not want to use trackpad emulation as a workaround.
This makes it look like the Smooth Scrolling modifier is intercepting or altering horizontal scroll events from the MX Master 4, and some applications such as Finder and Photoshop no longer accept those events. A modifier-specific scroll rule seems to bypass this behavior, which may explain why Command + thumb wheel still works.
Ideally, it would also be useful to have an option such as:
“Only apply this Scroll Modifier to vertical scroll events”
That would allow Smooth Scrolling to be used for the main vertical wheel while leaving the MX Master thumb wheel as native horizontal scrolling.
Please let me know if I can provide a debug log or test a development build.
