Before I spend more time building a workflow around BTT’s Save Current Menu Bar Profile and Restore Full Menu Bar Profile (slow) actions, I wanted to ask how reliably these are expected to work on current macOS versions.
My goal is to save a menu bar layout and restore the exact icon order later. I would also like the restore action to move selected, unwanted icons behind the menu bar’s overflow arrow, if that is technically possible.
Is this a supported and reasonably reliable use case, or is macOS menu bar management currently too restricted or fragile for this kind of automation?
the techniques are pretty different between macOS versions. For macOS Golden Gate Apple has completely changed it again. However with Golden Gate it should be most reliable because the new system is superior to what we had before.
I would say it is reasonably reliable, but I wouldnt depend on it for a guaranteed exact restore. macOS has changed how menu bar items are managed over recent versions, and some apps can reposition or recreate their icons after login or updates. BTT can save and restore the layout, but moving specific icons behind the overflow arrow is more dependent on what macOS allows for that particular item. Test your exact setup with a few apps first before building the whole workflow around it.
