hide menubar items not working since macOS27

Describe the bug
I set BTT to hide menubar items (left of BTT icon) by double clicking the menubar. This does not work anymore since I updated to macOS 27.0
I tried to set another trigger to hide menubar items, but this also doesn´t work.

Device information:

  • M1 Pro Macbook 14" 32GB RAM
  • macOS version: macOS 27.0
  • BetterTouchTool version: 6.821

one thing that's important on macOS 27 is that BTT (and all other apps for which you want to show/hide status items) are located in your applications folder and not some other location. Can you check that?

If that doesn't help, can you check whether the "Show / Hide Menu Bar Status Items For Selected Apps" action works?

Yes, all my apps are in "Programme".
To check your points, I reduced the apps (that I want to hide from the menu bar/ left of the BTT menu bar icon) to just two: Passwords and TimeMachine- both apps are in standard program folder.

Testing "Show / Hide Menu Bar Status Items For Selected Apps" worked, BUT only for the BTT app icon. I cannot select Passwords or TimeMachine. I tried "refresh available apps" several times, also while Passwords and TimeMachine are running, but the only app shown is BTT.

Let me know if I should try, test anything else.

Hmm ... sounds like the same issue I'm having. BTT menubar icon won't show in menubar after updating to macOS 27 - #3 by Jesse

In my case BTT´s icon does show up in menu bar.
my problem is BTT function to hide icons left from its menu bar icon does not work anymore since I updated to macOS 27.

Not the same issue, but maybe the same cause. :man_shrugging:

I can add some interesting info to this, also on macOS 27: For me BTT's icon DOES show up in the menu bar.

If I create a new action "Show / Hide Menu Bar Status Items for Selected Apps" the only app available to add to the list is BetterTouchTool itself, even if I quit and restart the other apps in my menu bar.

However, the action DOES work to hide the BetterTouchTool app's icons (multiple if you have added any custom BTT icons to the menu bar).

So my guess is that the app is having trouble locating other app's icons in the menu bar, and that's what y'alls actions aren't able to hide anything.

Read the comment I linked. Same issue. The title was a bit misleading

Same. Thats what’s happening to me.

On macOS Golden Gate it might be necessary to grant BTT "Full Disk Access" in System Settings => Privacy & Security => Full Disk Access in order to make it retrieve the menu items / apps

ah I think I missed that apple added a new file in the more recent betas / final version. BTT 6.824 (uploading now) should resolve this. However Full Disk Access (or a specific grant to the required files) would still be required.

(on my system it still worked because I upgraded from earlier betas that still had the file at a different location)

Granting Full Disc Access solved choosing apps for "Show / Hide Menu Bar Status Items for Selected Apps".

After updating to BTT 6.824 the showing/hiding of menu bar items left of BTT icon works again.
Thank you for solving the problem so fast, and thank you for your continuous work and this amazing software.

PS:

I noticed that while hiding items in the menu bar, the notifications cannot be entered by clicking on the time & date anymore. I still shows when gliding with 2 fingers from the right of the trackpad while items are hidden. When items are not hidden, notification center shows up when clicking date & time.
As far as I remember, before macOS27 it was possible to show notification center by clicking time & date while menu bar item are hidden.

Good observation! Same for me. Also, after granting full disk access, it worked. I thought BTT had full disk access already but had to re-add it and updated to 6.8424.

Do we need to make a separate bug report fot this? I was able to replicate it.

I'm using the version 6.834 with the Action "Show / Hide Menu Bar Status Items for Selected Apps"
The system "Now Playing" menu bar item is hidden even when I don't select it (actually I don't see this item in the list).

This is the doc about the "Now Playing" from Apple support:

The icon looks like this in menu bar:截屏2026-09-19 20.19.16

This seems to be a macOS 27 issue since the Hidden app also has this issue: 1.11.1/MacOS 27 - OS items are hidden · Issue #414 · dwarvesf/hidden · GitHub

Also confirmed that in hidden state I can't open notification center by clicking the clock. The Hidden project has issue and discussions about this: 1.11.1 / macOS27: When Hidden Bar is enabled, Notification Center cannot be opened. · Issue #421 · dwarvesf/hidden · GitHub
