Discussion: BetterTouchTool Launcher / Spotlight Replacement (very much work in progress)

First of all: Thanks a million for the launcher—it’s a blast to work with!

I do have one comment, because it’s unfortunately become a very common issue in my day-to-day work. It’s happened to me quite often now that I’ve “accidentally” deleted files and entire folders when I was actually just trying to correct the search text in the launcher (and the usual “Trash” sound doesn’t play when deleting either).

Is there a way to prevent this? Often, you don’t even notice it at first, and you have to be incredibly careful not to empty the Trash… Plus, you often can’t remember which context or folder the accidentally deleted files came from, which complicates things even further—and undoing the action later isn’t possible.

Thanks a lot!

@untiefenschaerfe can you explain a bit more how the deletion occurs? Accidentally pressing cmd+backspace?

I can add options to disable this or add a warning, in general files deleted via the launcher only go to the trash and are not immediately deleted.

Yes, the text is deleted when you press Cmd-Backspace, because in Launcher, not only is the text field active, but the first item in the displayed list is also automatically selected/active at the same time.

I should mention that I’ve been a LaunchBar user for years. There, the text you type is automatically cleared after a brief delay, and a shortcut like Cmd-Backspace was never necessary. So I’m still getting used to there new setting, and I ask for some patience!

Regarding your suggestions:

I actually think both options make a lot of sense, since users certainly use the launcher in different ways. These options would be helpful if only to prevent accidental mistakes during the adjustment period. Maybe a LaunchBar-like option would also be worth considering?

Thank you very much!

@untiefenschaerfe I'll add some more settings to control the deletion behavior on Monday.

I am not sure about auto clear but I guess it could be useful in some situations. I'll think about this.

v6.888 alpha should give another significant performance boost for the launcher, I profiled and improved speed & caching behavior across all launcher features

Launcher doesn't launch BetterTouchTool UI on my end. I open launcher with BetterTouchTool version 6.885, input 'BetterTouchTool', select it and nothing happens. Spotlight launches BetterTouchTool UI with no issues. macOS 27.

I think I don’t understand, what are you trying to do?

Trying to launch BetterTouchTool user interface/app via BetterTouchTool Launcher. Tried ten times in a row. Doesn't open on my end.

Thank you so much! Looking forward..

Can I use another magnifier/search tool icon color on the left of the input box? This one can barely be seen. I'd like a more macOS-default UX. Also, the button is pretty flakey, it randomly stops working and I cannot enter its settings. Please see video attached.

Spawns randomly not centered even though setting is set to fixed centered on current screen.

Every now and then, when I want to launch an app from the launcher, I type its name and press Enter, but nothing happens. The system just makes a warning sound. Instead, I have to click the item or press Cmd+1 (or another number). I haven’t figured out what causes it. Does this happen to you too?

@mkozjak the button issue should be resolved in 6.897

Tnx, btw, is there any issue tracking for BetterTouchTool other than this forum? I'd like to add the things I find there so they're easily tracked.

No, this forum is really great for tracking. (For bigger things best create separate topics but small stuff is fine in this thread)

It'd be great to have the ease in/out animation that stock spotlight has!

One more suggestion. I use cmd+d to toggle launcher with item called 'Apps' to search through apps right away. Sometimes I type so fast that I end up typing to the default (magnifier/search) search bar on Launcher and there's no time (a fraction of a second :D) for BetterTouchTool to switch over to the 'Apps' item. Is there a way to see if I configured some Item to wait for input before the switch to the item is done?

Servus,
I have separated apps in their owns desktops/workspaces. Launcher only activates when BTT is the active app. If i like to launch it in any other program, the HUD pops up showing the short cut works, but not the launcher window pops up.

Any idea what the issue could be?

Thanks....

@mkozjak thanks this should be resolved in 6.913!

@Espresso6 unfortunately I haven't seen such behavior and can't reproduce it. Which version of BTT are you on and what positioning setting do you have for the launcher?

Could we have an option to disable mathematical expressions in the launcher bar? Ie. disable calculating the result of "3+4".

Also, I feel that the logic for showing the "Copy Result" option should be that it doesn't show up until an actual mathematical expression has been typed like "44+3". Currently it shows up as soon as a number is entered like "44". My need for this is that I have a trigger that always shows up in the launcher, configured to always be the first result / top of the list. If I happened to have typed a number as the launcher prompt and then click that trigger, it uses that number in one of the actions in the trigger. However, typing a number (eg. "44"), causes "Copy Result" to show up as the first result instead of my trigger.

GitHub - noahdunnagan/fsearch: Whole-disk file search for macOS: fuzzy names, typo tolerance, indexed content grep. ~1 ms over 8M files. · GitHub is an interesting project that fits BTT's launcher pretty well, it gives near instant file search results but requires to build a file index which takes around 30s once and takes around 500-1000MB space. Also it requires Full Disk Access to be able to index everything.

You can enable it optionally in the launcher settings in 6.914

@Robert_Corlett entering a plain number should now not trigger the calculation engine anymore
