Bartender controversy, tutorial on how to manage menubar status items via BTT

ah interesting! I know why this is happening, but I‘m not sure how to reproduce it. Is there any special menu item related configuration you have done in istat menus?

@flipphillips is it possible the combined istat item is > 400px in width? (BTT ignores items bigger than that). I changed the limit to 1200px in v4.610 alpha

It might be - I'll check with this beta. I'm using the 'consolidated' setting that groups everything together into a single 'item' so I bet that's it.

Hi, is this the latest version of the preset ?
Just jumped on the boat and purchased a licence. I have installed the 4.611 alpha.

the last one shared is specifically if you use two screens above each other. If you don't, this one is better:

I'll update the tutorial in the first post today or tomorrow, currently finishing the various customization options.

Thanks for your quick reply, I sometimes use two screen above each other, but not everyday.
Most used cased : mac with notch on the left side, external monitor on the right.
2nd most used case : mac witch notch on it's own.
3rd most used case : mac in clamshell mode connected to external display.

I certainly had stuff mixed up today, i guess I got two conflicting presets active at the same time and would loose all menu bar items altogether...

I need to better understand how it works, and i guess I better rtfm once it's updated.

Thanks for all the works !

I tried playing with the preset you linked to, but could not get things to work. Understanding BTT and getting this menubar wizardry up and running is quite a bit overwhelming so far for me.
BTT is such an incredibly powerful toolset, there's a bit of a learning curve. I only used it in the past for window management, so I never got into mastering it.

I had to revert to using ICE for the time being, eagerly waiting for the BTT menubar management tutorial for newbies

Have a nice day all,

I installed this preset and it was mostly working but I must have updated BTT since then (I now have version 4.611?) but now I don't have any BTT icon (I've disabled and reenabled the show BTT icon in menu bar setting but it will not show). Most of my icons are now hidden and I cannot display them without quitting BTT. When I restart BTT they automatically hide again. There is a new action to Hide/Show icons before a specific icon (or something like that) but when I try to choose an icon there is only one option available and I don't understand what it means. I have reenabled Bartender for now to at least have access to my menu bar icons but even with that there is no BTT icon.

In case something gets messed up, there is a new action "Unhide all menubar icons". If that also doesn't bring back your BTT icon: Is it maybe deativated in the settings?

I unchecked that option, restarted BTT, then rechecked it and restarted again. Still no BTT menu bar icon. Is there some way to downgrade without losing all my settings?

Have you tried triggering the "Unhide all menubar icons" action?

But yes, you can just download one of the previous versions via Index of /releases, I'm not sure that would bring back your BTT icon though.

Got this one working in my trial copy, I have to manually hide the icons by double clicking on the
"<" after I position it in the correct spot. However, the floating bar shows all the icons, is it possible to make the floating bar only show the hidden icons? I have iStat, Little Snitch and Megasync always showing, which doubles up on the floating icon?

Is there any update regarding the development of the bartender replacement? I‘m waiting for and update of the stable version.

Sometime late today I'll release the next alpha with the ability to manage the items shown in the bar (and their appearance). Tomorrow I'll add the ability to monitor specific items for changes. When that is done I plan to do the first stable release.

Here is an updated preset that I have been using for the last few days:
floating_status_item_bar_4.614.bttpreset (83.0 KB)

BTT >= 4.614 adds the basic UI for managing the items. You can change the appearance of the whole bar and also of every item. You can hide items from the bar and reorder them directly in BTT. It's now "just" a floating menu that contains the "Status Item Widget" (which again contains the single status items)

I'll add documentation for this feature here: Manage Menubar Status Items · GitBook (WIP)

That sounds really nice and I will try it out as soon as the stable version is available. Short question: Is it already possible to move items from the hidden area or from the floating menue to the visible menue bar in case of a specific event. As example the battery icon should only be visible if the MacBook is not plugged in. If it’s already available, maybe you can include it in your documentation as well?

Greetings
Finke

I installed the latest version. After playing around (compared with Bartender it's not easy to use and self explaining), it seems somehow to work. Unfortunately I'm a little bit struggling with the floating menue, as it shows the same icons from the menue bar. If I move some items to the floating menue, my expecation is, that the item is not visible in the main menue bar anymore!? Also the "HoverRecognitionOverlay" is not clear to me.

you can hide items by selecting them and pressing cmd+d (or right-clicking them like in the video)

You mean from the floating menue? That's clear. But if I have the items in the floating menue, I don't want them in the original menue bar at all (also not as hidden item, left of an icon). Also I tried to figure out the relation between the "HoverRecognitionOverlay" and the "StatusItemBar", but was not able to figure it out. :frowning:

the hover overlay is just for recognizing when the mouse is at the top, you don’t need to modify that.

Bartender etc. hide items the same way, you just need to define the last item you want to see and then hide the ones left of that via the action. In the example preset all left of the < icon will be hidden when it is pressed
